Dear Eurospeech attendants, Praat is a computer program for speech analysis, synthesis, and manipulation. The Praat distribution on the Eurospeech CD contains the Praat executables for Macintosh, Windows, SGI, SPARC Solaris, HPUX, and Linux. 1. VERSIONS The Praat version on the CD is 3.9.31, created in July 2001. There are very probably newer versions when you read this. You can check the recent developments on the Praat home page: http://www.praat.org or http://www.fon.hum.uva.nl/praat/ To obtain the download address for newer versions, contact me by e-mail. 2. EXPANSION The executables are in an archived and compressed format. If the following directions do not enable you to successfully expand the executable for your computer, contact me. 2.1. Praat for Macintosh (PowerMac, G3, G4, iMac...) Drop the StuffIt archive praat3931_mac.sit on StuffIt Expander. This will give you a folder called Praat 3.9. Please read the file called READ ME. For best results with phonetic characters, you should also download and install the freely available SIL IPA fonts (1990 version, http://www.sil.org/computing/fonts/encore-ipa.html). 2.2. Praat for Windows (95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000...) Copy the self-extracting archive praat3931_winsit.exe to your hard disk. Double-click it. This will give you the program PRAAT.EXE. For best results with phonetic characters, you should also download the freely available SIL IPA fonts (1990 version, http://www.sil.org/computing/fonts/encore-ipa.html). Run the self-extracting archive SILIP12A.EXE, and then the resulting INSTALL.EXE. If you are asked what kind of fonts should be installed (TT or PS), choose TT (TrueType). 2.3. Praat for SGI (Indigo, Indy, Onyx, O2...) Unpack the compressed archive praat3931_sgi.tar.gz as follows: gunzip praat3931_sgi.tar.gz tar xvf praat3931_sgi.tar This will create the executable file "praat". You can remove the tar file. 2.4. Praat for SPARC Solaris Unpack the compressed archive praat3931_solaris.tar.gz as follows: gunzip praat3931_solaris.tar.gz tar xvf praat3931_solaris.tar This will create the executable file "praat". You can remove the tar file. 2.5. Praat for HP Unix (system 10 or higher) Unpack the compressed archive praat3931_hpux.tar.gz as follows: gunzip praat3931_hpux.tar.gz tar xvf praat3931_hpux.tar This will create the executable file "praat". You can remove the tar file. 2.6. Praat for Linux (with glibc-2, e.g. RedHat 5.0 or higher) Unpack the compressed archive praat3931_linux.tar.gz as follows: gunzip praat3931_linux.tar.gz tar xvf praat3931_linux.tar This will create the executable file "praat". You can remove the tar file. If you haven't yet configured your Linux sound system, you may have to recompile the kernel. 3. HOW TO START After successful expansion, you should be able to start the Praat program by double-clicking the "praat" or "praat.exe" icon. Praat should then start up with two windows, titled "Objects" and "Picture". If you are new to Praat, choose "Introduction to Praat" from the Help menu in the Objects window.
